September 2024 🌿

Welcome to the very first Plas Y Maes Newsletter!

We’re excited to bring you this monthly update, where we’ll be sharing the latest happenings on the farm, upcoming events, and stories from our journey toward sustainability and community. As this is our inaugural newsletter, we want to take a moment to thank you for being part of our growing community. Your support and interest mean the world to us, and we hope these updates will inspire you and keep you connected with life here at Plas Y Maes.

September has been a month of quiet progress and natural beauty here on the farm, as we make the most of the last warm days before autumn truly settles in. The sunshine this week has been a welcome change, giving us the perfect window to get back into the mandala garden. The weeding continued in full force, but our efforts have paid off as the wildflowers planted earlier in the year have burst into life. Their vibrant colours now create a beautiful and bountiful bed, providing not only a picturesque scene but also a vital food source for our thriving bee colonies.

The bees, as ever, have been hard at work, and it's heartening to see them thriving alongside the land's growth. Their buzzing presence reminds us of the delicate balance between nature and nurture that defines life at Plas Y Maes.

Over in the vegetable beds, the story wasn’t as sweet for the tomatoes this year. Sadly, the polytunnel beds were hit by blight, so we cleared them out, making way for new beginnings. It’s always a bittersweet moment, but there’s much to look forward to in the next planting cycle. Meanwhile, the artichokes are looking fantastic, and we’re eagerly anticipating harvesting them soon.

We also tackled the seasonal task of mowing and topping all the pathways and workable areas, leaving the grounds looking neat and ready for the coming months. The tracks that our volunteers worked so hard to create earlier this year have now settled beautifully, creating clear and inviting routes through the land.

The end of the season always brings with it a final round of weeding, but with that comes a sense of accomplishment. Every bit of work brings us closer to a winter-ready farm and a fresh start for next year.

In other exciting news, the geodesic dome has received its final touches! After some meticulous storm-proofing work, the dome is now fully weather-resistant, standing strong and ready to shelter us for years to come, whether for workshops, gatherings, or just a quiet moment of reflection.

Finally, Stuart has been busy over at the Cegin Hedyn Allotment, where he’s built a new hand-washing station for their volunteers as well as a water collection unit— both practical and sustainable additions that will serve them well.

As September draws to a close, we’re grateful for the progress made and the natural beauty that continues to inspire us here at Plas Y Maes. The changing seasons always bring new challenges and rewards, and we can’t wait to see what October has in store.

We’re excited to announce our Orchard Pruning Weekend Retreat from Friday, 15th November to Sunday, 17th November. It’s a perfect opportunity to learn how to care for fruit trees, enjoy some sound baths, and immerse yourself in the beauty of the land. Spaces are limited to 14 participants to keep things intimate, so don’t miss out! Head over to our events page to find out more and reserve your spot.

Until next time,

Warm wishes from all of us at Plas Y Maes 🌱
