Reflections at Plas Y Maes: Snowstorms, Community, and Cozy Connections

November arrived with a dramatic flourish at Plas Y Maes, bringing not one but two major storms and our first snowfall of the season. Heavy rain flooded some areas, powerful winds toppled trees, and we experienced a couple of power outages. Yet, amidst these weather challenges, life on the farm carried on with a steady rhythm of preparation, care, and community spirit as we embraced the onset of winter.

Our vegetable beds received their final attention for the year, with thorough weeding and a protective covering to let the soil rest through the colder months. The herb beds also got a winter makeover, with weeds cleared and protective layers of cardboard placed around them to fend off frost. Across the land, the main fields were mowed for the last time this year, marking the end of the growing season. In the orchard, strimming around the apple trees helped tidy and prepare them for a strong start in the spring. Over in the retreat field, shrubs were lovingly weeded and surrounded with matting and stones for added protection against the elements.

Much of the month was spent gearing up for our first Apple Pruning Retreat. The pods were thoroughly cleaned and made snug with freshly laundered bedding to welcome our guests. When the weekend arrived, the retreat proved to be a heartwarming success. Eleven participants joined Stuart, who led a hands-on workshop on the art and science of fruit tree pruning. With a mix of practical demonstrations and guidance on tools, everyone left with newfound confidence and skills.

The days also offered a chance to unwind and connect, with calming sound baths in the geodesic dome providing a soothing new experience for many.

Walking tours allowed guests to explore the beauty of the land, while evenings around the fire circle created space for conversation, reflection, and a sense of community that felt all the more special in the crisp November air.

In addition to retreat preparations, Stuart and Hannah stayed busy readying their stall for the Christmas Festival at Aberglasney Gardens, a three-day event showcasing their handcrafted creations.

This year’s show was made even more special with the launch of their new website, www.branchoutwales.co.uk, which highlights not only their beautifully crafted wooden products but also provides a platform to celebrate and support other Welsh artists. Be sure to take a look and explore the unique, artisan creations on offer!

As the storms passed and the month continued, attention turned to winterising efforts. The polytunnel was cleared of leaves and debris, the fruit cage was weeded, and the pods were tidied and bedding carefully stored away until spring. The drive to keep things organized and ready for the next season extended to a clear-up of tools, materials, and supplies, ensuring everything is in its place when we need it.

We were also thrilled to reconnect with a familiar face—Sara, one of our past WWOOF volunteers, visited for a weekend. Her presence brought back fond memories of shared work and laughter, and it was a joy to catch up and share stories of how the land continues to grow and evolve.

As the land settles into its winter slumber, we reflect on November as a month of resilience, preparation, and creativity. From the buzz of the pruning retreat to the quiet satisfaction of winter readiness, this has been a time to celebrate both the work and the community that make Plas Y Maes so special.

As we look ahead to December, we hope you’ll stay connected with us and join us for future events, workshops, and celebrations on the farm.

Thank you for being part of our journey!

Until next time,

Warm wishes from all of us at Plas Y Maes 🌱
